Function of Suction Filters in Hydraulic Systems
Suction filters are employed in hydraulic systems to remove contaminants from process fluids to prevent damage to sensitive system components. As the fluid flows through them, their porous filtration media captures particulates and pollutants.
Hydraulic systems often incorporate multiple filters. The ones used between the pump and actuator are called pressure filters, while the ones used between the actuator and tank components are referred to as low pressure or return line filters. Regardless of the type of filter employed, its performance is measured by how well it removes contaminants given certain conditions. For example, low-pressure filters are suitable for operating pressure of 10 bar or less, while heavy-duty filters are more appropriate for continuous operation in demanding applications with low to medium pressures.
Filters vs. Strainers
The terms “filter” and “strainer” are often used interchangeably, even by industry professionals. However, while there is some overlap in function—i.e., the removal of contaminants from process fluids—they differ in regard to the size of particulates they filter.
- Strainers use a porous medium to remove or prevent the passage of insoluble contaminants from a fluid. These contaminants are generally very small but may still be visible (typically 50 microns or larger).
- Filters also use porous media, but the filtration materials utilized are generally much finer, making them better suited for capturing smaller contaminants (often invisible to the naked eye) that are usually not removed by strainers.
Since filters have higher capture abilities than suction strainers, they are more suited to use in applications involving positive pressure and constant—i.e., non-pulsating—flow. Ideally, they should be used in return line or offline kidney-loop filter systems.
When selecting a filter for a hydraulic system, it is important to keep in mind the system’s operating and environmental requirements. For example, the micron level required affects the filter size and/or the differential pressure needed.

Conventional hydraulic suction filters use an accordion-style peaked pleat composition that results in almost 30% of unused filter area. This design is highly inefficient and difficult, and sometimes impossible, to clean.
All of our filters feature the following:
- A rounded root and crest pleat design. This unique design enables 100% filter area utilization, boosting efficiency and ensuring a cleaner and longer life for the filter. The design also facilitates cleaning operations, allowing the filter to be reused numerous times.
- End caps with the original mechanical lock design. The end caps are flared for a tapered channel construction. Assembled with our high-strength two-part epoxy resin bonding agent, the cap, center core, and element act as a single monolithic unit. This characteristic prevents separation failure when the filter component is subjected to extreme vibration or shock.
